New Year’s cardのことを、日本語で年賀状と言います。
New Year’s cardのことを、にほんごでねんがじょうといいます。
New Year’s card is “年賀状(ねんがじょう nen ga jou)” in Japanese.
今回の記事のタイトルと、年賀状に使っている言葉を1つずつ解説します。
こんかいのきじのタイトルと、ねんがじょうにつかっていることばをひとつずつかいせつします。
I explain every word used in this article’s title and “nen ga jou” one by one.
◎タイトル Title
「謹賀新年」
きんがしんねん kin ga shin nen
= Happy New Year

「新春」
しんしゅん shin shun
= Happy New Year
この「謹賀新年」や「新春」のことを「賀詞」と言います。お祝いを表す言葉という意味です。
この「謹賀新年(きんがしんねん)」や「新春(しんしゅん)」 のことを「賀詞(がし)」といいます。おいわいをあらわすことばといういみです。
These 謹賀新年(kin ga shin nen) and 新春(shin shun) are called 賀詞(ga shi). It means “congratulatory message”.

“戌(inu) = dog” in cursive script
日本には、各年を12種類の動物で表す習慣があります。
にほんには、かくとしをじゅうにしゅるいのどうぶつであらわすしゅうかんがあります。
Japan has a custom to express every year with 12 animals.
これを十二支と言い、元々は中国の文化です。
これをじゅうにしといい、もともとはちゅうごくのぶんかです。
This is called “juu ni shi(= twelve zodiac signs)” in Japanese, which is originally Chinese culture.
2018年は戌年です。「いぬ」の漢字は、普通は「犬」と書きますが、この十二支の場合のみ「戌」を使います。
にせんじゅうはちねんはいぬどしです。「いぬ」のかんじは、ふつうは「犬(いぬ)」とかきますが、このじゅうにしのばあいのみ「戌(いぬ)」をつかいます。
2018 is the year of the dog. You usually write 犬(inu) to express “dog” in kanji, but 戌(inu) is used only in the case of this “juu ni shi”.

「平成三十年」
へいせい さんじゅう ねん heisei sanjuu nen
= the year of 2018
「平成」は現在の日本で使われている元号です。2018年は、日本の暦では「平成30年」と言います。
「平成(へいせい)」は、げんざいのにほんでつかわれているげんごうです。にせんじゅうはちねんは、にほんのこよみでは「へいせい さんじゅう ねん」といいます。
“平成(hei sei)” is the era name used in Japan now. The year of 2018 is called “平成30年(Heisei sanjuu nen)” in Japanese calendar.
※2019年4月30日に、今の天皇陛下が退位されます。それに伴い、この「平成」は翌5月1日に、新しい元号に変わる予定です。
にせんじゅうきゅうねん しがつ さんじゅうにちに、いまのてんのうへいかがたいいされます。それにともない、この「平成(へいせい)」はよくごがつ ついたちに、あたらしいげんごうにかわるよていです。
The present Emperor of Japan will retire on April 30th, 2019 and because of the retirement, this era name “平成(hei sei)” will change to the new one on the next day, May 1st.
「元旦」
がんたん gan tan
1月1日の朝を表す言葉です。
いちがつ ついたち のあさをあらわすことばです。
This word means the morning of January 1st.
